I have realised today that Ruby has a great owner training method she has me wrapped round her beautiful little paw
She has turned really stubborn and wont do the simplest of things at first request - it must have crept up on me without me even noticing as we dont really practise the simple thing anymore. Last night at training the trainer physically had to put her in a down as she just wouldnt (I wasnt sure about the physically pushing he down but in the cold light of day she wasnt harsh or hard just 'no messing' but last night I was sooo upset as I have never used physical methods to ensure Ruby does as she is told)
I know its my fault I know I have been slacking and I know I have to go back to basics I am also going to priactise the Nothing In Life for Free apporach and have had a fabulous hour over the forest where I ensured she did a command each time before I threw her ball.
I just want to SSSCCCRREEEAAMMMMMMMM today though - oh dont you just love these stubborn 'teenage' pups hehehehehehe
Ah we went through this with our GR, he seemed to take great pleasure in embarrassing me at every training class we went to, to the point where our trainer couldn't get him to do what she wanted at times!
I always felt like he wanted to make me feel like a complete failure, though I knew deep down that it was my fault. So we did as you are doing, went back to basics and tried the NILF approach - it worked wonders! At 16mths old, he's now a much more obedient dog, and only needs to be given a command once.. Well, 95% of the time anyway
LOL Vicky, as you sy it creeps up on you!, altho its possible that ruby is due to start a season?, I know she hasn`t had one yet, like us I don`t doubt they get bolshi around that time
Awwww We have all been there and done that at some point. At least you found out early enough, that you can now do something positive about it before it becomes habit forming.
I love the Nothing in Life is for Free method, although I never realised what I had been using all these years had a name .
You'll soon be right back on track, especially once Ruby gets her season over and done with, as she is more than likely very hormonal at the moment .
You'll just get her exactly how you want her, then you'll start all over again with pup Number Two ....Are we mad or what????
http://www.k9deb.com/nilif.htm ere Nic - basically every time you give them something they have to earn it - sit for a bone. Give paw for their dinner etc etc etc
Oh the countless time I have had to go back to basics with Majic it drives you mad.
They both now know they have to do things before they get anything and it does pay off its just remembering to do it.
At the vets Majic has to sit and lie down as does Dexter if he ever goes, they have to sit and wait for the command to eat for their meals, if given a treat they have to sit' down and leave until given the command to eat.
Recall was done on a long line and is better but not perfect and we are still working on it
Like you say Vicky back t basics, we concentrate on other things and forget the basics and assume they will know it and that is it, but teenage pups just know how to play the game unfortunately
