How disappointing for you at this stage, but I am sure you have done just the right thing and the wait will be well worth it in the end. Sounds like its all going to work out just fine, but it will be bit of a wait....take up knitting or something to pass the time Wink

Haha yes I know, the time probably will pass before I know it! Which is both good and bad!

In the meantime, I'll pass on the knitting and stick with renovating Laughing

Katie,

Sounds very sensible as she was getting narky with you to walk away - I really hope the other more experienced breeders girls take and you get a super pup shortly....

Well, they responded to my email declining their pup and were rude. *shrugs* Just shows me I made the right choice.

I can’t help thinking you have done the right thing Katie. But then, not knowing exactly where you are in Australia I can't really comment on health testing. Lets face it, in comparison with Australia the UK is so small and so densely populated that I doubt anyone needs to travel more than 50 miles to get eyes tested. I could imagine in some parts of Australia you would need to add a zero onto that figure so problems of testing could well be compounded.

Di has explained about the inheritance of PRA (Which by the way means Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and the fact that not being clear does not automatically mean the dog should not be bred from. PRA is a very serious ailment which results in affected dogs going blind. There is no cure. So yes, it is one of the most serious things to affect Labradors.

Regards, John

I can imagine - coming back from Sydney, the first 5 hours of the flight were spent over Australian territory Shocked

Asking on my international labrador breeder forum about eye testing in Aust and how and where one goes for it and what to look for on the certificate to show a 'clear'.

Be back shortly.

I'm not sure where to get eyes tested here (does a standard vet do it or a specialist?), but as I live in a capital city I'm sure there would be many places to get tested? These particular breeders live 2-3 hours out of Perth, but they still live in quite a well populated area that has many vets around.

I once again want to thank you all for not only your wise words but your support as well. This place is great Very Happy

It would be by a specialist vet certainly, and yes, I would lay money on there being plenty of places around the major cities to get tests done. No responses yet on my forum but there are only a handful of Aust residents on it and I'm looking for hard fact not opinion from folks who might *know a bit about it maybe...* grin. You need concrete evidence of what you need to look for next time round.

Hope to be back soon on this.

Di
