Roly is 7 months old - he walks on a lead beautifully and when I take him to the field and let him off he always comes back - if we are on our own. If he catches someone on a bike, a jogger, birds or god forbid another dog!!! he is off like a shot and no matter what I do, whatever tone i use, whether or not he knows I have treats he just will not come back and the excitment takes hold of him and I end up legging across the field to try and get him back!!

I got him trained to come back by using the extendable leads, treats and the word here and as I say he does it beautifully. We take balls, frisbees etc but these are not enough to stop him from running after these other things!! It has come to the point where I am constantly looking out for other dogs etc and as soon as I see one calling him back and putting him on the lead - the trick is to see them before Roly does!!

Today I put him back on his 26ft extendable lead he could still run after his ball etc but I knew he would not shoot off!!

Do they grow out of it or do I need a different form of training - how have you all done it? Very Happy

Was Roly ok with recall around distractions until recently?, I`m just thinking that at 7 months he could be entering the "Kevin" stage, teenage years for a dog, when they try it on and attempt to get away with all they can!.

I`d go back to using the long line all the time until Roly will come back when there`s distractions on that as well.

others will be along to help as well I`m sure Very Happy

I second what Mary says - definately go back to using the long line - but not a flexi lead, they can be dangerous - a long rope or lunge line are far better and can trail along behind your dog but if he makes a sudden dash for a jogger you can quickly step on the line and stop him from running away......

Its not normal for a dog to have a perfect 100% recall before they are 2 anyway, just take very single opportunity to practice somewhere safe - my rule is that I have to be far more interesting to my dogs than anything else in the park, that way even if they see another dog/jogger/person they wont wander off as I am more exciting..... Very Happy

i'm sorry to hear that your roly has decided to be a little monkey. Laughing
i watched dog borstal the other day and one of the tricks they used for a naughty dog was noise distraction. if you get a small drinks bottle e.g water or coke and 1/3 fill it with stones and put the lid on (obviously Embarassed )
then when your dog goes for something it should'nt give the bottle one sharp shake and say leave (or your chosen command).
they first tried it when playing with a toy or something similar to get him used it and then advanced as was needed.
you could maybe ask a trainer if that would work cos it did say to ask a proffesional before trying it.
good luck. Very Happy Wink

Please do not use the above method to train your dog Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Obviously bluejimbo did not notice how scared the dogs were of the stones, if you had then you would have noticed that there was nothing positive about that form of training - in actual fact the dogs were being scared into submission.

The ADPT have actually applied to ban that programme from being re-aired as the methods being used to 'train' were infact nothing short of cruel.

Positive training, playing a game with your dog rewarding them with treats when they come is the way to train, not to shake a bottle full of stones at them Mad

I cant remember who suggested, but on a previous thread on this topic someone advised to scream like a maniac and fall down, or run in the opposite direction screeching! Hopefully your lab will return to you to ensure you are ok - either that or you look like a loon Laughing

I think the idea is to do something that is FAR more interesting than the thing he has spotted. But as your own dog sees you everyday it has to be something extremely distracting to deter them from their new interest!

I had a VERY embarassing episode when trying to recall Roly - I did keep shouting out "Roly Help Mummy" and screaming like a banshee but to my mortification the park warden came running over to assist Embarassed
