We had a dog trainer round the other night - that was recommended by our vet - it was really just to tweak his behaviour - try to stop the jumping up, the mouthing etc
Well.....

As soon as she came in the door he boundered over to her and jumped up to say hello, she then swung her knee up into his chest, pushed him away and shouted off. He was a little bit perplexed by this - not sure if she was playing or not - so he jumped up again and this time she did it harder - he whimpered a little and went away.

Then we were sitting down and he started mouthing her hand - well the next thing we know she has him by the scruff of the neck pulls him off of his front feet and shouts NO BITING then throws him and I mean throws him away - he starts crying. Me and my husband and my children just looked at each other not really sure what to do or say.

She says that compulsion is not neccessarily a bad thing - but if that was compulsion then I think that it bloody well was (excuse me)

What are your experiences of home trainers - are they all like this and am I being over protective?

Also what do you think about half check collars?

I would NOT accept this at all and I would have been absolutely furious if they had done that to my dog Mad The old school of training no longer has a place in my opinion. Get yourself a trainer from the NADT website (which I cannot find for the life of me - hopefully someone will have it to hand)

Mad Mad Mad furiously yours

Lucy and Pheebs xx

Here here - should have rolled up a paper and hit her with that while you grabbed the scruff of her neck and kicked her out. I don't think I could stand some one like that. Would she like your knee in her chest. Poor Rolly its enough to scare him off people full stop.

Hubby and I said that we thought she should go - and for days after we felt physically sick about it - Roly was not the same for at least 3 or 4 days after - very nervous and quiet also cried a lot - but he seems to have forgotten it now.

The best of it is is she keeps asking me when she will see us again as she is very busy and cannot hold the place much longer for us!!! Keep telling her we are not interested.

By the way - do you think I should report her? If so who too?

I'd tell her the reason why you don't want her back! Tell her she is a big bully and if she comes anywhere near your dog again or rings you again then you'll knee her in the chest and grab her by the scruff of her neck and throw her accross the room Mad

I have seen the knee trick -I dont like it- was used on an extremely boisterous dog- if caught below the rib cage potentially cause a problem.
Standing and turning, ignoring for jumping up will work but needs consistency and good timing- time outs for both jumping up and biting can be monotonous but will work. Tone of voice No with biting or high pitched ouch will work for most dogs. Avoid allowing your hands to be caught in a position to be bitten especially when any toys are used. How old are your children- are they directable in the rules of the dogs training? I know when we first got Jet, Andrew was only 2 and an absoloute nightmare =just as well we had a crate else he wouldnt have got any peace- though Andrew is the only one Jet will allow to use him like a Embarassed pillow Embarassed watching TV Rolling Eyes
How old is Roly?
The books by the dog listener Jan Fennell and 'its the dog or me' forgot hername- have got good advice. I am not one for books myself as I am a visual rather than reading learner- when it comes to this type need.

There are plenty of posts here re biting and jumping which you could look at- we've all been there and most of us have a trick that has worked. In all the years I have had dogs growing up and my oown no two dogs have been the same re problem areas- so its going to be trial and error or see a method you feel comfortable with and stick to it.

Hopefully others will come and give you some advice soon- its frustrating but with some guidance Roly will settle into the dog you want.
