Thanks Lucy.
I'm definitely going to up the ante on the treat front! I never thought of doing that...so I'm going to get some hotdog sausages and cheese (snap ), I know Danny likes these as he has "tried" them, but we never use them as treats at home...hopefully Danny will recognise these as "high value" too just like Pheebs does!
I'm also not going to feed Danny before this weeks' training class, but can I ask why don't you feed Pheebs before her walks? just curious, as my Dad also taught me that the walk after feed allows them to do their "business"...
I know what you mean about the boredom factor at training, I've struggled to find a new class - the place we're going is where we went for basic training, the woman (who's very good), doesn't run another programme as such after the basic, but just does an "allcomers" session every week - you don't have to go every week, and anyone can turn up, so there's dogs (and owners) at all levels...I couldn't find another one near me for love nor money!!! I called one of the APDT listed trainers who told me "She didn't have any classes running that were suitable for Danny, and 2 one-to-one sessions would be better", and another APDT listed trainer only runs classes during the day - not in the evenings Maybe this is why there seemed to be so many people at this one!

I was always taught that exercise on a full stomach is a no-no, especially as Pheebs swims nearly everyday - a bit like us humans I suppose, we're told never to eat before exercise or swimming for the risk of cramps and then getting into distress
The other reason is the same as for training - Pheebs is not the most switched on little girl and any distraction she is off to investigate, yet if she is not full tummied, treats are wanted, therefore she tends to stay close. Her recall is not 100% so if she is full, she ignores me - food is definitely her motivator. I personally feel that she works harder when we are training in the fields if she is working on an empty tummy and we get so much more training done and more effectively.
BTW I'm not saying I starve her just that now she is on 2 meals a day she gets fed at about 10:30am-11am (as she won't eat straight away when she gets up at 6:30am) and then last meal is at about 9pm - so she either has a walk at 9am or 6pm

Hmm, that's interesting...I understand your logic...
You're lucky with your morning feed - Danny has us up between 5.00-6.00 to be fed as he's obviously hungry, but having said that maybe if we changed his routine he wouldn't do this...maybe I'd be better off feeding him later both morning and night, walking him first...

It's up to you - I'm just saying what works best for us. You have to do what's best for you and your pup - Pheebs has set this pattern herself, we haven't created it for her, she was very good at getting herself into a routine right from the beginning. Having said that, she doesn't REALLY have a strict routine (I've tried hard not to get her stuck in one cos we are always doing things that mean a change to her day).
Good luck, whatever you decide has to be right for your family
