Ok, so I've now had time to reflect and am feeling a bit more positive about the experience. I am going back next week, and perhaps I overreacted, but then again its easy to do when you have a monster dog!!!!
It was really hard work. Danny was completely distracted - really not focused on me, but focused on every other dog there. I was really quite upset when I got home, it was as if everything he had every learnt had been forgotten. He wouldn't leave the dog we were next to alone, he dragged me round the training area, he jumped on other dogs, he wouldn't sit when asked, if he did sit he laid down, it looked as though I'd done nothing with him for the past 6 months Although having said all this - he wasn't the worst there!!!!!!
One question for some advice please the training class starts at seven, so when I got home from work I fed him and walked him - do you think the fact that he's been fed had any effect on his behaviour? Should I wait and feed him when we get back, so as the treats become more interesting?
what treats are you taking? Can you up the value? Take something he NEVER gets at home I use chicken, liver and cubes of cheese. Also when he is waiting for others to do something keep working him then he wont get bored I usually just hold a treat up and Ruby concentrates on that for ages and ages.
Its sooo horrible the first week in a new class all those new dogs to sniff and all the new smells of the new place too it will fall into place I am sure we are on week 4 of our new trainng school andit was only the week just gone that I felt that we were finally getting somewhere.
Good Luck and remember Rome wasnt bult in a day - that what i keep telling myself anywya pmsl hehehehe
Thanks Vicky....I never thought of upping the ante re: treats (they are really tasty ones, but he also has them at home when training too).
I think I'll go and get something else, especially for training nights!
We never feed Pheebs before training or walking. They are far more focused on you if they are empty tummied. I wouldn't feed Danny next week when you get home before going to training. Take some yummy scrummy treats with you. We use hotdog sausages and stinky mature cheddar plus we never use these as treats outside training classes cos they are high value - these are Pheebs' favourite and she always responds to them and will do anything for them, therefore impecable behaviou
Good luck - let us know how it goes
PS At our last training school Pheebs got worse not better - she was BORED STIFF! Same rubbish commands over and over and over again, week after week. We're due to start a new school in a couple of weeks and I can't wait - very highly reccommended club that has an actual programme of study and tests I LOVE tests
