I think he has gone a bit mad after his week on-lead after his op.
Plus I made a few irreversible errors in his training as a first time dog owner;
1. When he was little we didn't have to teach him recall, he just came back every time. That was until he reached about 6 months!
2. Using lots of different commands for recall, as Clare mentioned, instead of just one
3. Giving the command when I KNOW he's not going to come back.
Stormy has a great recall. Initially as a pup it was spot on, then he hit adolesence and it became a nightmare. That resulted in me having him on a 30ft line every day for 6 months. I hated that line, but it did the trick. We had to work on recalls all the time. He came off the line last December and he has only ever ignored my recall twice in the last 8 months. I also use a whistle and find that works a treat. For 4 weeks now he has been doing his obedience classes off lead. There are 4 other classes going on at the same time, rabbit and horse smells in the field,so I have to make sure he is under control at all times, but he never attempts to go over to another class or away from where we are training. I don't know if this is due to the fact that our training school is adamant that our dogs must not greet each other and that we have to become more interesting to them than any other thing. At first I found this hard to understand, but now I see the benefits and the trainer explained why, so I can see now why he suggests this. Recall is the most important thing, so keep going at it. If you work at it, then it will come right for you too. Remember never to get annoyed no matter how long it takes for him to come back to you, but when he comes back fast give him a few tiny treats as that is a jackpot and we want to encourage that.
Hehe Sacher sounds EXACTLY like Joey, Nic!
She's a little angel at puppy class, showing off infront of all the other pups and acting like the class swot and as soon as we're back at home, she switches her ears off and i might as well not be there .
It's all gone hill in the last few weeks and it's funny becasue she could be off lead on her normal everyday walk when she was 12 weeks but now at 6.5 months she has to be on the lead for almost all of it as she has dicovered that cars, horses, cows, other people and other dogs are far more interesting than me
So no, i don't think re-call can be 100%!
I didn't know there was such a thing as 100% recall in a Labby Twigs is V good when it is just the two of us - but if OH with us she seems to think that I am OK and she can wander off - but still not too far and always within sight (ish) - but she did go a bit far the other day and I made Mike hide behind a tree with me - sorry I know it is mean but Twigs was soo scared for at least a second ! before we jumped out - she did stay slightly closer for the rest of the walk!
When she has her pals with her she is far more adventurous - but they are both boys and one has always been pants at recall - she still tends to hang back and wait for me tho - but you can tell she's dying to go off and join them - which when I tell she she can - she is off!
I think for a 9.5 month old Twigs is pretty good so long as there are no food, kiddies or squirrels around - so thats not too bad!
