Out of all the things we teach Joey this has to be one of the hardest (except for heel of course!)

In training sessions he is perfect at this, but on walks it varies from walk to walk. Sometimes he comes speeding straight back, others its as if I'm not even there.

When off-lead he also is happy to wander quite far from us as long as he can see us, and he's also discovered the joy of chasing rabbits. When he goes out with our dog walker one of the dogs she walks is a bit of a madam who disappears off a lot looking for rabbits, so I assume thats where Joey has learnt it from because he goes along the same route that she goes on, and as far as I know he's never actually seen any rabbits there.

I suppose I'm just looking for reassurance really - will this come in time as he gets older and the world is a less exciting place???

I wouldn't bet on it. My OH's Lab is almost 9 years old and his recall is still very dodgy. lol
He also kinda picks and chooses when to return. lol

Leos 16/17 months and his recall is really good. I wouldn't say its 100% because i really don't think you can ever say any dogs recall is absolutely 100% no matter how fantasticlly they have been trained. There will always be something, or some hesitation at some point during their lives and training.

a 100% ................... is that possible lol

Fidgit sounds a little like Joey - selective deafness methinks as we know she can do it and like you at training - does it first time every time. It just all goes downhill when we get home Shocked

Oh mine are perfect Nic ........ NOT

Although they don't like to lose sight of me and if I keep quiet and don't call them they come speeding back as they have wondered where I have gone, I hide behind trees and all sorts, someone will section me one of these days Sad

It is hard but Majic is so much better after been long lined for a while and Dexter is just a star bless him unless there is a river nearby so I now change route so they can't second guess where I am going so they stop to think 'what on earth is she doing' and come tearing back as it must be more exciting Very Happy

I do this too Carroll! Its so funny if I can sneakily see him trying to find me!

He also stays closer if I am waking him on my own which I think is sweet!

I'll just keep plodding along at it!

Charlie too is much better than he used to be, but I doubt he will ever be 100%.

I too find that varying my routes helps where possible, or maybe even trying out a brand new walk. Then he seems to pay much more attention to where I am and what I am doing.

Helen.

I have to say that since using a whistle - all 3 of their recall has been a lot better. Didn't realise how much I needed it til today when I took all 3 for an offlead run and forgot it - so recall wasn't too great. Having said that, Doobies recall is quite good really and as the other two follow him everywhere this has helped them too! Very Happy (they tend to stick together as a little pack Very Happy )

I'll find out later how good Megs recall is, she was given all clear today after her spaying, before the op she was pretty good, but not 100%
I have a feeling in my water she will go deaf now she has finally got her freeeeeeeedom back lol
