well bailey is toilet trained now, as long as door is open. when it is hot we leave patio door open and he always goes toilet outside. howver with the rain we have been having the door has been closed more today. a couple of times he has done a wee inside. Once he went to the door and stood looking at it, but i didnt notice until too late. How can we encourage him t bark or signal that he wants out?
Hi When he went to the door that was him telling you that he wanted to go out just keep an eye on him as soon as you see him do it again let him out its not easy lol

As Marie says, he`s found his own way of telling you he wants to go out, some just stand and hope, other will woof, CJ paces up and down, Cindy goes mental barking and crying
It`ll mean keeping a close eye on him to watch out for his going to the door
I read in one of the doggie mags about someone who put a bell on to the door handle and trained there dog to tap it when wanting to go out.
It might sound far fetched, but it does actually work. I only had to show Meg a couple of times and she got the hang of it, every time she touched the bell I opened it straight away and then gave her a treat.
Eventually I stoppped the treat and gave her a big fuss, now all I do is open the door and she goes and spends a penny
sorry to hijack this but can you tell me if i can buy one of those wee england tags online??
my husband is english and bob would look great wtih one on his collar and the kids would think its great too
thanks
shona
Hi Shona, I think they were done on Ebay, whether the chap will send to NZ is something you`d have to email him about, I`m sure Wendy will be back to let you know where she got it from
Love that pic of Bob!!, typical daft Lab thinking he can fit in a small bed!, CJ does the same with Cindy`s
we got the england tag from pets at home when the world cup was on, but im sure u must be able to get them online too. will help u look later
as for the asking to go out, we cant watch the door all the time. u cant see the patio door from the kitchen, or from upstairs.im hoping intime he will tap the door, or bark to go out. or that he will just be able to hold it until we see he wants to go out, as at the moment he goes wee about 10 secs after getting to the door, whether it is open or not lol
you will get to know the look or way he chooses to tell you
max will come to me and give me a look that i now know means "open that door or its going on the floor" he will then go and sit bolt upright facing the door.
hes done this since he was about 5 months old
I think they all develop their own way of telling us they need to "go" with time.
I've never encouraged any of my dogs to bark or whine, but they all seem to use the " Quick quick, Timmy's fallen down the well" sort of Lassie tecnique to getting my attention ; running up to me then back to the door, up to me and back to the door, etc , perhaps with a nudge with the big wet nose for good measure, if I'm not looking. I've never taught them to do this, I suppose once they really know they mustn't "go" inside, then they need to get my attention somehow.
The bell idea sounds good, although I know for a fact that if Mojo thought she was going to get a treat whenever she rang the bell, it would be tinkling all day long .
