Sorry to hijack this thread, but after reading that Flatcoats have less joint and eye problems than Labs, I was also wondering if the same was true of Curly coated retrievers.
As much as I love the look of flatcoats, the few that I've met would have tested my patience and sense of humour (they were very Setter like), but having met a couple of Curlies, I must say I was very taken with the solid and reliable look and temperament they have. I did have one on my wish list , but after reading that they were so rare and there were so few in the gene pool, I'd assumed that they were probably not the healthiest of breeds. Reading about the more robust health of the flatcoat has given me renewed hope that the same is true of the Curlies.
In answer to your question; yes our Labbies wriggle like piglets to start off with, but, if you don't give them the option, they soon get used to being carried. The only problem comes when they reach about 6 months old and weigh 25kgs plus .

My lab loved it! He became a kind of 'dead dog' when carried. He completely flopped his head and legs. As he got bigger it was easier to carry him on his back (I'll probably get told now this was a real no-no! ) but I swear he just tried to make himself as heavy as possible!
