Woody has been with us now for almost a week and has settled in brilliantly. He has been offlead on his morning walk for the past 4 days and his recall is perfect. He loves everybody and all dogs but this morning paul said that he ran up to a man who was all dressed in white and barked at him. I remember Nic saying that he was a bit funny once when her OH appeared without his shirt and I'm wondering if this is all connected with something that has happened to him in the past.
He didn't show any aggression towards the man but obviously this is not acceptable and must have been worrying for the man, a huge dog barking at him. Maggie unhelpfully then jumped up at the man who was very good about it as Paul was full of apologies. He will be back on the flexilead tomorrow as a precaution but not sure what to do about this. Any advice? If only he could tell us what he's been through.
Dexter has done this on a couple of occasions with bald headed men but he was on lead one at the service station on our way back from Cornwall and I thought oh what do I do and just by reflex action turned away from the man and walked Dexter away for a while then went back and the man was still there and this time I said hi to the man and jollied Dexter along and no barking, he has done it again and did the ame thing and it worked again.
This may not be right but it seems to work for Dexter
Maybe ask the man (if you see him again) if its ok to try and get Woody used to him by him standing and you or Da walking him back and forth a few times?, if the the guy didn`t seem to mind Maggie jumping at him, he may be amenable to helping out
Alternatively if you have friends willing to help out by dressing in white and doing the same kind of thing, get it so they are able to pet Woody without him being worried about it.
Its such a shame when they can`t tell us what happened in their past and we can`t assure them that it`ll never happen again now they are with us
Thanks guys, we will try socialising him with this man next time we see him (he is a regular on the early morning walk apparently) but I wonder if he will react to him if he is wearing different clothes?
Dogs can be like people and show dislike to certain men and ladies by barking at them not agressively. People who they have never seen before
I have a yellow bitch who has always shown a dislike to certain men, she can be out on a walk with me and the rest of the dogs and if a man who is new to her that she doesnt really like the look of and she will stand about 10-20feet away from them and start barking at him. It can take a fair bit of coaxing from me and the man whoever he is to try and stop her barking. Sometimes it works enough for him to go up and stroke her.
I dont know why she does it for certain, but some people have said to me that it could be a protection thing.and she is trying to protect me and any harm that might come to me.
During the winter last year I walked her and ellie past a public house and a man come out slightly drunk and tryed to talk to me, She imediately took a dislike to him and started barking, she was still on the lead. I brought her in close to me and she still would not stop barking at him. It was as if she was saying........Stay away from my mum, i am not sure and happy about you talking to mum. We both tryed to calm her down and it took about ten minutes for this to happen and the man to go up to her and stroke her.
I know some people do say that dogs dont have any feelings and not to be silly but quite honestly I think other wise.
Di could it be like when Ruby was barking at everyone through fear when we went camping? John did me a fabulous reply hang on off to get the thread. Rubys was through fear and I know she hasnt had the experiences Dex has but it could work
