Hi I gave Jenson a Piriton tablet yesterday morning and one again later in the day and 1 this morning and omg hardly any scratching he hasn't been to the cow field either for 2 days but which ever 1 has made a difference I don't mind i'm just glad he isn't scratching.
My question is how many days can I use Piriton for ?
If there are no obvious side effects, then I can't why they can't stay on them for a good few weeks. After all us allergic humans take AH's for many months at a time and I have one friend who is on them permanently.
Hi - sorry just seen this, so you may have all the answers by now. We started Ben on piriton last summer as he developed hay fever for the first time. He had a steroid injection which totally 'cured' him - but only for a few weeks and so we put him on the piriton after that. He had two a day to start and then we reduced it down to one a day as he seemed to get a bit better. He was on it all summer and didn't seem to suffer any side effects at all - he didn't even get drowsy - typical!
Last Sunday he started again with the itching, scratching and puffy eyes so he is now back on the piriton and I will give him one or two a day for the next few months. It was originally prescribed by the Vet, but now I just get from the chemist. I do make sure I get actual piriton though and not one of the other types of tablet, just in case, as I have heard that some are not suitable for dogs.
I also use Dermacton cream on his feet and legs because otherwise he just licks them until they are sore. It stops him licking, but am not sure if this is because the cream actually works, or whether he just doesn't like the taste!
Dylan was really suffering too until I put him on Piriton. He is on 3 x 4mg tablet a day. Started him about 5 days ago and the difference in him is just fantastic - absolutely no side effects just as nutty as usual
I did give him piriton last year but only 1 tablet a day which was in hindsight not enough. He got a really bad hotspot through the scratching last year and I'm hoping the piriton will help avoid that this year.
I really didn't want to take him to the vets again as all he does is give him a steriod injection.
I intend to leave Dylan on piriton for a month but am gradually going to cut down to see if we can reduce it to 2 a day.
Like Jules I don't see why it should do any harm to be on them for some time.
Yes - I agree - I don't want to go back to the vets as I don't want him to get another sterioid injection. Also, think I might up his dose too, as I tried to keep it to a minimum and, with hindsight, don't think it has been enough. Have given him a second tablet today, but that's the first time this season (only a week) but think two or three would be better and then to gradually reduce it.
