if i dont think max is drinking enough then i add a splash of my coffee to his water bowl (just enough to colour it) and he then thinks hes got the same as me and will have a good drink Wink
also i make plain water ice lollies and he will happily sit and lick those, again he thinks hes getting my stuff bless him Wink

just read this thread, i know the weather is cooling now but i learnt my lesson on this one from bitter experience, when i took zak out (he is my first lab so i am a bit green)on a warm day, he had been on his own for 3 hours so feeling sorry for him i took the ball and let him play i thought he was really enjoying himself so kept him at it 10 mins longer for a treat, little did i know i was nearly killing him, he collapsed on the road just as we left the field and if it hadn't of been for 2 passers by one who gave me there bottle of water for him, and the other who phoned my OH to come get us in the van Zak may well not be here today, it took us 40 mins to get him back to normal, by sponging him with cold water and giving him water, i had him checked out by the vet the following day, and happily he was given a clean bill of health, but i had learnt my lesson well the hard way, i have never been so scared in my life as i was for him that day, and the guilt i felt then and now for being the cause of it wont ever go away, so if putting my experience down for others to read and learn from prevents it happening to another dog, at least some good will have come out of it,

thanx for reading

fledgling and the now much cooler zak

Now I know why I keep reading LF. Such a fountain of valuable information. We are lucky enough to live not far from a big lake so that's where Rufus gets most of his exercise when it's hot. We are taking him to Ireland in the summer, not usually renowned for it's heat but on holiday, he'll get less time to cool down indoors. Now I'll know the signs to watch out for.

Thanks again LF, once again you've given some great advice.

Yvonne

After reading this, I've given Cadbury a good soak with the hose and brought him indoors, thankfully being on the coast we usually have a cooling breeze blowing about, but in the future I think I'll keep him in at midday just to be on the safe side.
