Posted: Tue Jul 25, 2006 4:32 pm Post subject: How can I help Millie settle?
I know its only been just over a week but her clinginess is gradually getting worse, so I really want to help her before it gets to be a problem.
She follows me from room to room and if I go out one door and come in from another she is all excited and whiney (even barks) - like I had been out for hours! As soon as I enter the room, whether I have been gone one hour or 5 secs, I ignore her. Its got to the point where my other two are copying now
I know she is VERY insecure and unsure and I am hoping this is a settling in period, but I really want to make sure this doesn't become practised behaviour. Never had this behaviour with either Doobs or Gracie.
So am I doing the right thing by ignoring her behaviour - or is this something she will overcome herself once she realises she is here to stay and she won't be moving on anyday soon?
It breaks my heart to see her so unsure and all I want to do is tell her she is loved and there is no need to be so worried
I have no experience of this at all so can't be helpful, but it just made me sad to read of her obvious worries. Poor little mite - if only they could understand.
____________ Philippa and Dan
She could have wiped my feet first
its the way she looks at me - like 'Mum! Mum! Please don't leave me! I am a good girl and I love you - please don't leave...' and then brings me a present from the toy box. It is so hard on her. My poor Millie
Just wanted to lend a bit of support, Sonia, though I have no advice as I haven't had this behaviour. Charlie does follow me slavishly from room to room when I am home, but does not usually whine and is quite happy to curl up in his basket when I have to go out.
Poor Millie sounds as if she is very insecure, probably as a result of having had a number of homes. I guess she just has to learn to trust that this one is for keeps, and it will hopefully get better with time. I am sure you are doing a wonderful job with her.
Ruby wa/is like this Sonia (not a rescue either) she would whine howl barks if I even dare to go upstairsand if i go and put the rubbish out she greets me like I have been gone for hours.
I received some advice a few months ago that really helped - i was advised to leave her with a little food while i was gone just enought to last until I came back. This would condition her into thinking good things hapen when i am not there and also distracting her. It really really helped - I bought a molecube and would put some food in t for her (5 bits for popping out to the bins 10 for taking washing upstairs etc etc)
Is she from IRR as they may have a remedy to help her to settle.
Dexter is on 'combo' and just got 2 new bottles and his nibbling of his legs has improved a lot no chewing to make them bleed which was his stress release
Is she like this when you go out or have you not gone out yet?
Hi Carroll - yes she is part of the IRR family - same as Gracie She is on the combo too but not really helping and I am really to the letter sort of gal when it comes to these sort of things.
Funny coz if I do go out I listen to her whines but this only lasts about 30 seconds then nothing. When I do come back nothing is touched so I know she isn't being destructive and is just the happy lab when I come home. She seems worse in a way when I am home - she doesn't sit still unless I am and I swear she would follow me to the loo if she could! lol
I suppose the fact I am the 4th home she has lived in since May, doesn't help
