Morning all, little Barney has start to nip a bite hard when he's excited, how do i put a stop to this? He also when very excited jumps towards the face and tries to nip it.

None of its done in an angery way he's really just playing but whats the best way i nip this in the bud, lol (excuse the pun!)

Abbey used to do just the same , always jumping towards our faces if we were sat on the sofa or on the floor.

We used a firm NO and time out. We used to put her out in the hall for 5 mins MAX to clam dowm then we let her back into the room with giving her no eye contact and we didnt speak to her.
She soon learnt that we didnt like that behaviour and she eventually stopped doing it ! It does take lots of perserverence and patience. You need to make sure that if you decide to do time out that you do it every single time she does whatever the unwanted behaviour is, and that everybody in the house follows the same rules too !!

It does get better but takes time.
Good luck

Oooo me again ! sorry !

I just thought, lots of people use the word 'ouch' in a high pitched voice to stop the biting, when the pup bites you respond with ouch! but like everything this doesnt work for all pups and i know with abbey this just used to make her worse and go loopy !

It really is finding out what works best for your pup, which just takes time and trying different things.

Hi Vinze
Someone told me that you should instantly fold your arms and turn away, ignoring the pup completely. This makes you very boring and they soon get the message that you're much more fun when they don't bite. It might be advisable to stand up for this, especially with children, incase he decides to go for their faces.

It seems to be working for us, but as Lorri says, everyone has to do the same thing to avoid confusion.

Good luck, our pup's the same at the minute, but it's supposed to be something they grow out of hopefully. Smile

We tried the high pitched 'ouch' with Simba and the folding arms turning away and ignoring but she would just hang off the back of your trousaurs with her teeth. Every pup is different but the only thing that would work was time out. She was popped in her crate with door shut for 5 mins and she would just go to sleep so she was obviously over tired as soon as this behaviour started. The children would feel sorry for her.

I didn't leave her unattended with the children either at this stage as I was constantly having to rescue one of them from her and we did have numerous clothes ripped as she hung off of them. Try all the suggestions and see what works for you. If you don't crate then put in another room for 5 mins. This stage is very trying and lasts a couple of months. Good luck!

regards

sorry guys only just reound this topic, barneys the same if use the ouch idea he just goes nuts and if i turn around and ignore him he goes for the feet, i just cant keep them still when he's chomping t them lol

Ive been using the hallway idea, and as he (on his third/forth) visit there
dozes off i think it is when he's getting over tired. Think i might try to put him to bed when he starts. Give him his time out in the hallway then once he's settled pop him off to bed Smile

Henry is going through that phase aswell. It's really tiring and frustrating. We tried the folded arms thing and ignoring him but he would then go and chew something he's not supposed to so we had to give him attention again grrrr. So we are now doing te time out into the kitchen (too many tasy bookshelves in the hall!! ) We have found this has begun to work along with the command 'no biting'. When he comes back we give him a chew which will keep him happy for a while.
I can't wait for him to grow out of this! Not sure how long the hands will stay intact!

Ever thought about getting a crate???? He could make as much noise as he likes then but at least you know he isn't eating your house. Wink
