To take food away can so easily make a dog protective of his food. This is why I prefer to add to the food. I want my hands to be seen as no threat.
In the things I do take away, I try to give back by far the biggest majority so again, the act of taking away is not seen as a negative thing.
Dogs growling, It is just another sound dogs make and needs to be read along with the rest of his body language. The tail wagging, mouth open big grin growl is a "This is fun mum!" type of growl and totally different to the stiff legged hard stare growl.
Tug of war. Something I never do because I dont want my dogs forgetting in the heat of the moment when they have a pheasant in their mouths! The gamekeeper does not like two half pheasants being delivered instead of one whole one!!!
Regards, John

I do things a little differently from John on the food aspect.... but it works for me... at least up till now As john feeds Kibble which is easy to add to... I feed raw and tend to give one whole large peice...whether a wing, carcass or rack of rib etc... I need to know that I can remove this without a) fear and b) making the dog possesive... so when I begin to wean I hold onto their food and they eat out of my hands, I then progress to just giving them the whole thing to munch on.... a puppy will begin to get slightly possesive of their food at certain stages, this is where, again, I hold the food for them.... usually with a pair of pliers puppies can get over excited with a wing etc and the little needles do hurt.... and because I am already holding their food, I can remove it for just a second...keeping it in their sight, and giving it straight back to them...
the tug of war thing.... same as John... Two of my dogs work, the others dont, but they learn from each other. but I have to admit I do have reservations on the tug regardless of reasons.... this really is just a personal thing....
