Hi, Every tuesday me and Bella go and pick my daughter up from Brownies, It's a nice night time walk plus she gets lots of fuss. I've been taking her since we could take her out really as it's just round the corner at our local church.
There's a couple of other labs there aswell. Everyone is always friendly, fuss her a bit, give her alot of attention but she goes really shy! The weird thing is though it's only at the girls in the Brownie uniforms. She just doesn't like Brownies! Hides behind me all shy and quiet, totally not herself, she's usually really friendly. She has also started to snap at them aswell if they don't leave her alone, just the Brownies! I can't understand why! I thought it could be like a fear stage but it's just with the girls wearing Brownie uniforms.
Confused Confused Confused

do they still wear hats? an old dog of mine did not like hats or beards(I'm assuming no beards he!he!) could it be a hat thing? or is it all a bit overwhelming?

Baxter comes to Brownies with me most weeks (I'm Brown Owl!) and he used to get a bit overwhelmed at the start. I think with him it was just that number of little people, but maybe it's because there's so many people that all look the same i.e. the uniform - it must be a bit weird for them?

Try getting your daughter her dinner several times while she's wearing her uniform - Baxter used to go nuts about hats, so this is what we did and he's ok now.

The other thing to do is just to ignore her, as long as she's not snapping. If your not bothered, she'll learn not to be! Whatever you do, don't baby her about it!

Baxter sometimes gives people with beards a bit of a funny look too!!

The best one we have here is 'Tudors'. No, really!

Kentwell Hall is is in the next village, and they stage Tudor recreation things all summer, so there's often lots of people dressed up as Tudors about - he hates them! I think it's the floaty clothes and silly headgear - but he hates Tudors Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

It could be they have overwhelmed her a bit at some stage and she's wary now. I have had small children rush up to Dan, their eyes level with his, and the child has instantly raised their hand to pat his head and fuss him. He's fine, doesn't snap, but is a bit wary about it and obviously doesn't like it much. We don't have very small children, my OH's son is 12 and he loves children of that size - especially boys! I try and discourage them from doing it but sometimes its happened very quickly with the child running straight up to his face - especially if they aren't used to dogs themselves. Its the sudden raising of the hand above his head he isn't very comfortable with and I wonder whether some of the Brownies have done this to her, maybe a few of them at a time, and I can imagine it could have fussed her a bit. Children that know about dogs are much more aware I find and always ask first if they can stroke him. He is fine with the sort of slower approach.

I think its a good suggestion to have your daughter wearing her Brownie uniform around her more at home and maybe having a couple of her Brownie friends round for tea wearing theirs.

You don't want it escalating where she starts snapping at the children. I also think you could tell the children to approach her quietly and one at a time if they tend to all rush round her. I can see how it could be intimidating for a dog.

Good luck!

Laughing Laughing Laughing

Just a little aside here, I do recall having to get my daughter dressed in a Tudor costume so that she would be accepted on a school trip to Kentwell Hall when they were doing one of their recreations of Tudor times.

It was well BC (Before Charlie Laughing ), so I don't know how Charlie would have reacted. Rolling Eyes

Thanks, probably is a bit overwhelming for her, never thought. i'm probably best waiting further away from the door in future see how she goes. None of them have scared her at all, there's just so many of them!
