Hi there,
At night time we have to leave Nero downstairs by himself as he will not walk up the stairs and obviously we cannot sleep downstairs. He stays in the kitchen and seems to be very good so far (he doesnt bark or chew anything, just seems to sleep). I am wondering however if sleeping downstairs away from us will affect him as i suppose to him it just seems like we are out somewhere for 8+ hours.
We have tried to persuade him to go up the stairs but he just sits and barks and you so leaving him in the kitchen seems the only thing to do.
Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

im sure your pup will be fine Laughing someone correct me if im wrong but im sure dogs produce , melatonin, the same sleep hormone as we do, so as it gets dark the body starts readying itself for sleep, so he wont be thinking youve gone out and left him for 8 hours, hopefully he'll be sleeping the same as you, but if hes anything like my pup as soon as its light the wake up hormone kicks in !!!!! around 5.30 at the moment, roll on winter Laughing

Nero will be fine Very Happy He obviously likes being down there alone or else he wouldn't be quiet all night and sleep Very Happy We often feel worse than our pups about these things.

How old is Nero? If he's under a year old he shouldn't be climbing stairs anyway; it's everso bad for their hips/joints.

He sounds happy enough Very Happy I wouldn't worry about him.

ohhh bless him - I have the other problem Ruby wouldnt sleep downstairs and we still carry her up and down and she is 20kg (she is only 10 months so cant do stairs atm) and for the sake of hubbys back I think Nero is being very very considerate. Lots and lots of dogs sleep in the kitchen that was out plan with ruby but she hadnt read the books as we had hehe

Thank you for replying everyone, it makes me feel so much better that we are not being evil leaving him by himself! It is funny, we have only had him 3 days but i already miss the smell of him when we go to bed hehe.

I think alot of members pups sleep downstairs or even a different room - Bailey has always been downstairs - i think i missed him more than he missed us to be honest

He really sounds fine - especially if he is so quiet in the night - as you say - you have only had him 3 days so you'll get used to it soon dont worry Smile

A few weeks ago I would have disagreed, but think Clover's has now started to kick in Very Happy Now, she will go out for a wee and straight back in her crate Very Happy - can't wait to get rid of these light mornings though Shocked

Although you like the thought of your puppy being near you at night time its good that the pup likes to be independent and on its own. Many people have the exact opposite problem to this. My lab is very clingy and likes to sleep with me in the bed. Think yourself lucky in a sense.

I understand how you feel though, you want to feel like this puppy needs you but this can turn into serious problem if they become clingy when you start leaving them in the house.

I'm sure you and your little pup will be fine.
