Warnings after river algae finds
Toxic algae has been discovered in rivers in north Cornwall.
North Cornwall District Council says people and animals should keep out of the River Neet and the Bude Canal.

The blue-green algae is caused by the sun shining on water rich in nutrients. It is a regular occurrence, but can be very dangerous if swallowed.

Environmental health officers are asking people not to use affected parts of water and keep livestock and pets away. No beaches have been affected.

I phoned our council about the blue/green algae at plessy woods like you advised Rhoni, and he was so matter of fact about it! Shocked
I said how toxic it was, not just to dogs but it can make people very sick too. The guy knew all about that type of algae and after a bit of persuasion he said he'd ring the park. I also suggested that he might want to put something on their website to warn people and he said he could do that! Rolling Eyes
Gwad talk about getting 'blood out of a stone'.......! Rolling Eyes

Hope you got his name Kimberley, then if anything (heaven forbid) happens you can tell the local media you reported it and nothing was done to warn people.

I didn't catch the guys name tbh Mary. In a way I suppose I expected him to be more concerned about it, and wasn't prepared for his laid back response. Sad

Hmmm having had a look at the picture of the algae there is a pond on one of our walks, which doesnt look as bad as this but it does look shinny on the top bit similar to the picture, looks like someone has put some light oil in, do you think this could be the algae ?

this was 2 weeks ago now, we dont go this route when its this hot to far, and when I am taking Jansen out late its not safe i dont think.

any advice?

In our local paper today - Derbyshire Times, there was a warning about blue- green algae.

It is in the lake at the Queens Park in Chesterfield.

Even though dogs should not swim in there as it is a boating lake, I have seen some dogs in there.

There are warning signs around the lake.

If you have a dog, please avoid the area and find somewhere else to walk until an all clear is given
