Hi

I went to the Butchers yesterday to get Abbey some liver and i asked him for a marrowbone.
He said he very rarely gets them but he has pork and lamb bones that they give away for free !!!

I got a bag of pork bones fairly big ones too !

But my question is - how often should Abbey have them ? and should i reduce her daily intake of burns the day she has a bone?

She ate a whole one yesterday so should i not give her one today Confused
(it took her 3 hours to devour it !!!!! )

Hi,

Sorry I do not have an answer for you, but will watch this post with interest as Cadbury also adores bones and would eat them every day given the chance!! Very Happy

I generally reduce her meals if she has had 'extras' and treats during the day.

I don't think a bit of variety does them any harm - as long as their not eating treats all the time.

Doobs only gets marrowbones as an odd treat - but only for two reasons. Its hard to get hold of them, and also his bottom burps stink to high heaven after!

oohhhh I didnt think they were allowed pork????? Isnt it hard to digest or something??????? Not sure someone will confirm deny that I am sure.

I get 2 pieces of marrowbone a week and Ruby has one on a tues/wed and one at the weekend - the marrowbone is quite fattening but I dont have to worry about that with Ruby so I just give freely without reducing her meal. Chewing bones is fabulous for their teeth and develops their neck muscles also not to mention keeping them quiet hehehehe I love bones Wink

I gave my dogs one each yeasterday and I have already been down to my local butcher due to Wednesday being his delivery day for meat and pre-booked 2-3 marrowbones for collection this aftermoon. One things is puzzling me though can you freeze them or are you best just chilling them untill you want to use them.

I also dont want to sound thick but I was talking to a lady out walking her labrador today and she reckins that you should never give a dog uncooked marrowbones as the upset the dogs stomach. It seems that there is still so much ignorance out their in society about giving or what to give a dog to chew.

Why is it also that P>A>H is still selling cooked bones prepacked for dogs, I was so shocked the other day when I went in to buy something.

I think it is just chicken bones that should be given raw as splinter when cooked , but i think ( not 100 %) you can give them cooked bones of other animals.
Hopefully someone can clarify the confussion of bones ! and how many they should have a week !!!

Many THanks
