My black lab girl is a very fussy eater. From the day she arrived at 12 weeks she has picked her food, spat it all over the floor and generally not wanted any of the varieties of dry food. We have tried Beta, James Wellbeloved and currently Hill's Science diet - all receive the same treatment. She likes chicken, stewing beef, minced beef and white fish, but no one thing 2 days running. We have tried mixing the dry food with the meat but she either leaves the lot or picks the meat out. She is 1 year old now. Our vet says we must force the issue and starve her out until she eats the dry food. We tried this but after 4 days we couldn't stand the sad face any longer. The vet tells us that she should not eat much fresh meet as it will eventually give her skin problems. We have 4 cats, the lab never steals their food, as treats she has a chew stick for her teeth and 2 PetTabs which she has at bed time which she enjoys. She also likes the occasional bit of fruit (never grapes) and organic yogurt. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi

Have you tried the food down for 15 mins and if left after that you take it away and nothing no treats or snacks and then she gets the next meal at the alotted time.

I have had to do this a few times with my girl and it eventually sinks in that this is my meal better eat it or nothing else till x number of hours.

They can play you very well if you are prepared to change food every so often they will play this game a lot. Very Happy

Welcome to LF also Very Happy

Tried that several times over the last few months and she will go 5 days with just filling up on water - you can see the weight falling off. The vet has checked her thoroughly and there is absolutely nothing wrong - just a difficult eater. In every other respect she is the easiest dog I have had and has a very gentle personality.

Do you feed her tit bits off the plates? She obviously enjoys her treats.

It will take time for the routine to establish itself, but it would definitely be worth a try

Have you tried mixing some luke warm gravy in with it but not gravy that contains onions as that is no good for dogs.

Or some live natural yog? Very Happy

She has no treats when we have tried the "starving out " system and she will not even touch meat with gravy let alone the dry stuff. What is this BARF diet and is it any good?

Thanks Carroll I've drunk the tea and read the article; it sounds interesting. Can the dog eat the raw chicken bone? Are lamb chops ok as well? What about her skin? To me it seems more natural than eating processed chicken and rice. By the way I get her meet in Lidls as it is much cheaper than our butcher - its origin is s Ireland.

My Meesha is 2 days younger than Majic. Message from Meesha to Majic is "Happy Birthday Majic" hope my Mum sorts my dinners out soon.

Majic looks bigger than Meesha - currently 19inches at withers and 25kg. How do I add the pictures?
