OMG!!! How horrifying! I am going to Wales in a month time for a little holiday and I am really worried now... I will have my long training like with me and I don't think I will have leave Kyra off my sight!
Sadly this has always been going on, all over the country, and still is.
Highlighting this current episode in West Wales is not an isolated case......this is happening every day across the country......thats why 3p and I always come across real boring banging on about keeping your pups safe and tattooing and alerts and be careful in woods etc.....
Labs are going EVERY day.........
PLEASE please never become complacent peeps...keep them safe....don't let your pup become one of our statistics.......they only have you to keep them safe............
The whole dog stealing thng is just so horrible isn't it? I think that I'm quite paranoid about it, but you have to be really don't you? If ever I get talking to unknown people on a walk I start "moaning" on about all my dogs health problems past and present and saying things like " well, before she was spayed..." or "since she was spayed...". There are probably a lot of totally innocent people out there who think that I'm really boring and a bit mad for going on about vet visits etc, but I figure that maybe one day it could just make someone think twice about trying to steal one of the girls.
I must sound like a paranoid owner when i tell EVERYONE who speaks to me about mine, about their GPS's.......
Tis an uphill struggle to make people realise how rife the theft problem is.....
Some mornings while 3p and I do our daily ' surf ' and see how many have been stolen nationwide since our looking 24 hours previously, we are often tempted to add those links.....just to highlight this real and everyday occurance
Never apol for being careful and suspicious... The most innocent question to you can be the most useful info to others
Oh my goodness. I have just started a new topic called 'Meeting strangers' and after posting decided to go for a little trawlround and came across this thread. I feel even more jittery now. Thanks for the heads up, we are new dog owners and we need to know these things.

On this subject of dog napping; a few weeks back we were approached by a man while we out with Destiny, but he turned out to be an 'Insurance' man. He told us that claims for 'stolen' dogs had risen by as much as 10 times on last years levels with a really steep increase around Leicester for some reason. He said many of the owners were contacted by the 'finders' offering to return the animal for usually £450 no questions asked. He said most people paid up and didn't involve the police. He was aware of a few cases were the owners of small breeds were intimidated into paying up by being threatened with having their dog put in with a pit bull type fighting dog and 'ripped to shreds'.
He said the 'suspects' were usually 'travellers' using white vans and mobile telephones.
And no Insurance man didn't try and sell us anything!
Dog theft is theft, so if your local police are slow on the up take remind them of Section One Theft Act 1968. There may also be offences of burglary, threatening behaviour and extortion to be considered. All these offences are classed as 'arrestable' and therefore de facto 'serious'. Don't be fobbed off and insist on reporting it as a crime not just a lost dog.
This whole business is really nasty, why should we have to worry about this kind of thing? It makes me so angry, where were these people dragged up? what would their mothers think? There are enough things in life to stress us out, ie taxes, mortgage, work etc, when you get home, your lab is the release, now these evil people have made our leisure time, our quality, family time another cause for anxiety. How would they feel if they had their child stolen?

When Bobo was one year old as usual I took him with me to the horse shows. That year I was competing at the Three Counties at Malvern. It was hot so I left him chained up in the horse trailer where it was cool whilst I went in to the ring with Dobbin(!!!). When I got back no sign of Bobo or his collar/chain. He could not have reached the clip to unclip himself so I knew he had been taken. I went cold. Luckily as I frantically ran round I spoke to a car park attendant who said he had seen a black lab running about and that he would keep an eye open. About 20 minutes later he came with Bobo and his tie acting as a lead. He commented on how strong Bobo was and that he had nearly pulled him over twice we agreed that it had probably saved Bobo from disappearing beacause he is virtually untrainable he has even decked my 19 stone husband!!. The thieves must have let him go when they realised how naughty he is to this day I am glad he is a naughty boy otherwise I would never have seen him again. I leave him now at grandma's where he is safe...
