An impawsibly clever canine
bradleysmum writes: " Jaws will soon be dropping at checkouts all over town, thanks to one supremely talented puppy.
Shop assistants will be rubbing their eyes in disbelief when they witness little Yannick calmly paying for his disabled owner's shopping, even putting the correct change back in the purse.
Not only that, but the dexterous doggie is being trained to help his friend to dress and undress, do the washing and even respond to emergencies.
The prodigious pooch (pictured) was picked by charity Canine Partners when its staff visited Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and realised his lively good nature and love of play made him ideal for such a special job.
Now the charity, which specialises in providing highly-trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities, has teamed up with the home in the hope it can provide a steady stream of suitable canine carers.
Originally called Ben, four-month-old Labrador cross Yannick was brought to the home when his owners found him too much to handle.
But Canine Partners spokeswoman Karen said his irrepressible personality made him just perfect.
She said: "It has to be a specific breed. It should be a working-dog size with stamina and it should like to play. It mustn't be greedy, possessive or snappy, but happy, playful and with a calm temperament, and keen to play and work which are the same thing."
And the 18 months of training is all done through play, said Karen.
"We'll be able to use tugs, and the command tug tug' to teach him to start pulling laces, a skirt or a sleeve. From there we start putting the commands together.
"In shops, he'll be helping to retrieve something off shelves if they're low down or heavy, laying it into the basket or the person's lap. He will hand over the person's purse to the check-out assistant.
"The assistants are gobsmacked at first."
In 18 months, Yannick will be able to respond to more than 100 commands, making one lucky person's life much easier.
This could be the start of a fruitful partnership between Canine Partners and the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.
Picture shows Ben looking at his Hero Canine Partner Endal, who features in the latest Battersea Paws magazine, out now!
